BEST GPS AND NAVIGATION APPS FOR ANDROID

HERE WeGo

HERE WeGo, formerly titled HERE, lets you download maps of entire countries and use them almost exactly as you would online. What's more, it allows you to do this entirely for free.
Here WeGo offers a different aesthetic to many other GPS and navigation apps, and some might prefer its ways. Certainly one to try out, as it is undoubtedly an excellent app.
Key features:
  • Voice-Guided turn-by-turn navigation all over the world
  • Real-time information on traffic conditions
  • Building plans for shopping centers and airports
  • Distances of public transportation services, directions and information
  • A route planner for car, public transport and on foot
  • Saved locations

GPS Navigation & Maps by Sygic

Sygic is one of the most popular offline navigation apps on Android, and with good reason. The TomTom-powered app offers high-definition maps for most countries in the world, and recently received an update that brings it more in line with Android Lollipop (i.e. it's easier to use than ever). It's recently gone down the freemium route, offering many maps for free, but providing extra features such as live traffic information, regular updates and extra navigation voices at a price.
Key features:
  • Offline map navigation
  • Voice-activated GPS navigation with full route guidance
  • 3D cities and landscapes
  • Multiple routes and drag-and-drag route editor
  • Speed limit and camera / radar warnings
  • Head-up Display (HUD) projects GPS navigation onto your windshield
  • Millions of points of interest (POI)
  • Helps to find the cheapest gas based on your gas type

Maps.Me - Offline Map & Routing

Maps.Me was well worth the US$4.99 price tag it used to have on the Play Store, so imagine our delight when the app was made absolutely free. If you haven't picked this one up already, we highly recommend it, because not only is it one of the best Android map apps available – with a clear and simple UI – but it also works offline and includes points of interest such as subway stations, ATMs, petrol stations, and so on.
Key features:
  • Walking directions for hikes and trails
  • Supports 345 countries and islands
  • Millions of points of interest and tourist attractions
  • Features offline maps and offline search
  • Location-sharing via email or SMS
  • Auto-follow mode; when enabled, the map automatically orients itself to the direction you are moving

Waze Social GPS Maps & Traffic

Waze is a free Navigation app that relies on its community for its traffic information, so it's just as well that it's one of the most popular apps of its kind on the Play Store. As a member of the Waze community, you can report accidents, police traps and road closures, which then get cross-referenced with other users' input and broadcast for other users. It also has a very nice interface and a few other nifty features, such as showing you the cheapest gas stations en route, and a points-based system, where being an active member of the community sees you climb the Waze ranks.

MapFactor: GPS Navigation

MapFactor uses OpenStreetMaps (OSM) map data, which gets installed on your device so you don't need an internet connection when using it. MapFactor offers all the usual bells and whistles of SatNav, with turn-by-turn directions, voice navigation in several languages, and the option to change your route depending on whether you're driving a car, a truck, or just walking. It also includes audible noise warnings when you approach speed cameras – not that you would ever dream of breaking the speed limit, would you now?

Best 3 cheap phone

What's the best budget phone? The best cheap phone in the UK is the Moto G 3rd-gen after it's price cut, followed by the Vodafone Smart Ultra 6. Also check out the Smart Prime 7 and the Motorola Moto E 4G as cheap alternatives. Read more about these phones and some top cheap phone alternatives in our best budget phones chart below. Plus: what to look for in a budget phone.

3. Xiaomi Redmi 3

  • Ratingratingsratingsratingsratingsratings
  • Reviewed on: 2 February 16
  • RRP: 152.88 USD

The Xiaomi Redmi 3 is a very decent budget Android phone, but it isn't intended for a UK audience and doesn't come with Google Play installed out of the box, so we wouldn't recommend it for those not familiar with Android. It has a plasticky but decent build, with good performance for the money.

2. Wileyfox Swift

  • Ratingratingsratingsratingsratingsratings
  • Reviewed on: 26 November 15
  • RRP: 171.57 USD
For a brand-new smartphone maker's first effort, we're impressed with the Wileyfox Swift. It's a stylish little handset which offers essentially the same specs as the Moto G for less money. We love the customisation available in Cyanogen OS but elements such as the cameras aren't as good as rivals. Vodafone's Smart Ultra 6 remains a better option for slightly less money - unless a 5.5in screen is too big in which case look at the Smart Prime 6 as an alternative.

1. Cubot P12

  • Ratingratingsratingsratingsratingsratings
  • Reviewed on: 21 January 16
  • RRP: 103.72 USD

We can't argue with the immense value for money offered by the Cubot P12. It's not the fastest budget phone we've seen, but it is probably the best-looking. The lack of 4G support is disappointing, but the spec sheet otherwise offers fairly impressive reading at this price. A strong rival to the Vodafone Smart Prime 6 as a network-unlocked budget smartphone, even if Vodafone as a brand is much better-known in the UK than is Cubot.

Samsung Galaxy Note7 review: he new phablet from 7th heaven

It's no secret that Samsung has launched the Galaxy Note7, a new smartphone for 2016 aiming to be one of the best Android phones you can buy. Instead of waiting until IFA in Berlin, Samsung has announced the Note7 at various locations around the globe today. Here's our Samsung Galaxy Note7 hands-on review. See also: Best phones 2016.
Before we dive into the review, you might be wondering what happened to the Galaxy Note 6 – considering the Note5 didn't even get a proper UK launch. Well Samsung wants to keep the Note range in-line with the Galaxy S range. Afterall, it does make sense if all the phones launched in the same year have the same model number.
It's also worth pointing out that the naming system is 'Note7' with no space following the Note5, that's not an error on our part.

PRICE

The Galaxy Note7 release date in the UK is 2 Septmber with the option to pre-order from 16 August. The Note7 price, via MobileFun, is £749 SIM-free which is rather expensive.
If you pre-order then you'll get the phone three days early and Samsung will also throw in a free GearVR when you buy from selected retailers so look out for the deal.

DESIGN AND BUILD

When it comes to design, Samsung has struck a nice balance of retaining the look of the Note series while bring the style of the Galaxy S7. In this case, particularly the Galaxy S7 edge
as the new Note7 has the dual edge curved screen as standard.
What's quite amazing here is that the Note7 doesn't feel like a phablet despite the screen size remaining at 5.7in. It's not much bigger than the S7 edge and the device feels more manageable than ever.
This slab of metal and glass looks and feels great, although be wary of the rear cover as the slippery glass means the device is likely to slide out of your pocket when sitting down or make its way slowly off the edge of a sofa arm.
Build quality is up to the usual high standards which we've come to expect from Samsung with smooth flushness where materials meet, precision drilled holes and the like. The Note7 is available in a range of colours including Gold Platinum, Silver Titanium, Black Onyx and Blue Coral. The latter is an eye-catching combination of blue and gold as you can see in our pictures.

HARDWARE AND SPECS

Sticking to tradition, the Galaxy Note7 has a 5.7in display so users of previous Note phones will feel right at home. Despite rumours of a 4- or even 6K resolution, Samsung has sensible stuck to QuadHD (1440x2560) which it uses on the S7 handsets.
It's still a gorgeous display using the firm's favoured SuperAMOLED technology with the added bonus of the dual edge. It works in the same way as the S7 edge so you have a subtle curve on either side unlike the 2014 Galaxy Note Edge which had a large curved section on one side.
It can be used for various things such as quickly accessing your favourite contacts or apps – we'll talk more about it in the software section. Samsung has also brought over its 'always on' screen feature (which is optional). This means even when you turn the display off, it will show you some information like the time and some notifications.
Bringing the Note range up to speed, quite literally, the Note7 is powered by the same processor found in the Galaxy S7 – that's Samsung's own Exynos 8890 which, in the S7, we found more than capable. The Note7 has 4GB of RAM despite rumours of 6GB which means the OnePlus 3 remains in its exclusive club.
When it comes to storage, the Galaxy Note7 comes with 64GB as standard and retains the Micro-SD card slot for adding more. A good move since the Note5 didn't have one and nor did the Galaxy S6 which wasn't met with gratitude from users.
Beyond the core specs, the Note7 is packed with tech – almost to the point where we're struggling to find something which it hasn't got.

SOFTWARE AND APPS

It comes as no surprise that the Galaxy Note7 comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow pre-installed and Samsung's own TouchWiz user interface. We assume that it will get an upgrade to the upcoming Android 7.0 Nougat but official confirmation is yet to come.
Long gone are the days when TouchWiz was a bit too crude, complicated and generally a bit over-the-top. Nowadays, the user interface is much cleaner and closer to stock Android but with useful additions presented in an easier way to handle. Subtle differences like softer colours in the icons all add up .

Alphabet reports $21.5 billion in revenue for Q2 2016

Alphabet — Google’s parent company  — just reported their quarterly earnings for Q2 2016. Alphabet CFO Ruth Porat told investors the company is seeing 21% revenue growth (year on year) with $21.5 billion in revenue ($8.42 a share). This is actually up from Wall Street expectations of $20.76 billion ($8.04 a share).

Google’s core business makes up the majority of their earnings, with $17.53 billion and $185 million for their “other bets” projects like Google Fiber, Nest, and Verily. Google also saw a 33% increase in its “other revenues” which includes the Google Play Store and hardware sales.

The world has been going crazy over a new app called Prisma

The world has been going crazy over a new app called Prisma. You’ve probably come across some sort of coverage on the app over the last few days, we even put together a quick list showing you 11 photos made better with Prisma. Just a little something to show how well the app works in practice.
For those still unaware, Prisma converts your stale old photos into works of art, applying unique art filters that completely transform them into something you’d want to hang on your wall. Using a combination of AI (artificial intelligence) and machine learning, Prisma analyzes your photo then applies one of 30 available artistic styles to it. This turns an old photo into something that looks hand drawn or painted and the results are really quite impressive.

Right now, the app is still early and while we’re still having fun applying these unique filters to photos, apparently Prisma already has plans to include video as well. There’s no exact ETA on when we can expect the feature to land (only in the coming weeks), but in an interview with Bloomberg, Prisma confirmed that technology is already ready, they’re just waiting to update their “computing infrastructure” first. Video is a little more demanding than a photograph which already takes anywhere between 5-20 seconds to process.
So there you have it. If you currently love applying photos effects to photos using Prisma, just know that video is also on the way. We’re guessing the end result could look something like 2006’s A Scanner Darkly — only in bite-sized clips — a film which used a similar artistic filter throughout the entire movie. For more on that, check out the trailer below. Consider us excited.

Android Nougat Update: When Will YOUR Phone Get It?

As of right now, this is the Android N update schedule for Nexus:
  • March: Android N developer preview 1 (alpha)
  • April: Android N developer preview 2 (beta)
  • May: Android N developer preview 3 (beta)
  • June: Android N developer preview 4 (with final APIs and SDK)
  • July: Android N developer preview 5 (near-final build)
  • August/September: Final Android 7.0 AOSP build
Nexus is always first in line. This is why KYM has been recommending Nexus handsets for years. If you love Android and hate bloatware there really is no better handset. Last year’s Nexus 6P was superb in almost every regard and this year’s Nexus 2016 phones — both of which apparently HTC-built — are shaping up to be utterly awesome, if present rumours are taken at face value.
But if you, like the majority of Android users, aren't rocking a Nexus handset, well, you might just have to wait that little bit longer for Android N to arrive on your device. The reasons for this are myriad. Unfortunately, long delays on Android updates, even for flagship phones, is a fact of life within the Android Kingdom.

Google launch "Google-branded" Android phone by Christmas

According to The Telegraph, Google is developing its own phone plans to launch later this year. Unlike the Nexus phones, which are designed and manufactured by partners like Huawei, HTC, LG, Asus and Motorola, the report states that Google wants to have full control over the hardware and software.

Clearly, the prospect of a phone Google Android flagship brand is an exciting. Currently, the Nexus phones enjoy fast software updates (or at least relatively fast) when new versions of Android out. Manufacturers of other Android phones can be slow to launch new versions of software Google and often superimpose their own interfaces and decrease the level of applications and services Google in favor of their own.

With a phone designed by Google, buyers can expect a seamless marriage as the iPhone hardware and software - that is, the best experience you can get from Android. With the Nexus 6P and 5X, Google was vocal about his involvement in the development of the camera, and that was a good thing. Extend that to the rest of the phone, and there is great potential for exceptional device.

It is unlikely that the measure would Apple worried, however. Eating away at sales of the iPhone, Google would be in direct competition with its partners, including Samsung. You will have to be careful to avoid alienating Samsung and others, and not - for example - braking future versions of Android and making them exclusive to your own phone (s) for a while.

This is not the first time we've heard on a phone project of Google, of course. Ara project, which currently is delayed, is modular smartphone Google that allows you to update only certain components.

But while Ara seems like too ambitious and reduced a phone designed by Google Android is not far-fetched. Google will not make the phone itself, of course, as Apple does not. a third party who has the ability to mass produce the phone in the Google quality requirements will be used.

We have already seen this in action with Google Android tablet itself, the pixel C, revised. Google could use the name of pixels in a phone too? We'll have to wait and see.

Android N preview : Android 7.0 Nougat

Google has confirmed the Android N name and we know that Android 7.0 Nougat will be released later this year on the Nexus 2016 phones. You won’t get it properly on your device for a while but here’s a Android N preview so you can check out the best new Android 7.0 Nougat features. Read: How to get Android N now.
Android N is now on its final Developer Preview (version 5) before the public rollout which means we’re getting closer to the final version and the release will happen ‘later this summer’.

WILL MY DEVICE GET THE UPDATE?

It's hard to be too specific at the moment but we do know some things for sure, partly because Google announced the expiration or lifecycle dates for current Nexus. The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P are the latest and will both be upgraded to Android N, and the Nexus 9 should get too since you can get the Developer Preview for this, you can to the pixels C and Nexus Player. Older devices have already exceeded the date of an update to Android guaranteed.
We'll have to wait for details regarding Android manufactures third but if you're device was launched this year or late 2015 there is a good chance you'll N. Android Devices like the S7 Galaxy, HTC and LG 10 G5 are almost a given.

Best HTC Vive games of 2016

2016 is set to be the year of virtual reality, with the likes of the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR all set to hit the market. It’s an exciting experience ordering a HTC Vive headset, but what about once it arrives? Which games will you play via SteamVR? Here, we round up some of the most exciting games and experiences available for the HTC Vive in 2016.

Fallout 4

Arguably the biggest VR news story to come out from E3 2016 is Bethesda's decision to out a VR spin of its post apocalyptic hit. Revealed at its press conference, Pete Hines, VP of PR and marketing said: "We think that the greatest promise of VR is its ability to immerse players completely into virtual worlds, and that the best games for that experience will be first-person open-world RPGs."
There's no details whether this will be an adapted version or Bethesda will port the original game, but what we do know is that you'll have to wait until 2017 to play it.
Out 2017

Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope

PC gamers will be familiar with this classic shooter that's not a proper sequel to Serious Sam 3, but gives you something to play while developer Croteam gets to work on it. There's not a lot known about it outside of the trailer above, but it looks like a game in the Space Pirate Trainer mould where you'll shoot from a stationary position taking full advantage of Vive's motion controllers to blast the enemy into pieces.
Out Summer 2016 through Steam Early Access

Star Trek: Bridge Crew

Set in JJ Abrams' Star Trek universe, Ubisoft and Red Storm Entertainment unveiled its four player co-op game that could really showcase the potential for shared VR gaming experiences. You'll be able to play as the captain or various officers aboard a Federation starship with gameplay elements set to include activating the warp drive, scanning objects in space and broadcasting images to the ship.
Out Fall/Autumn 2016
